Writers and Directors Worldwide Adds Formal Support to the “Stand up for Croatian Cinema” Campaign

In a letter to the Croatian prime minister, Writers and Directors Worldwide has formally added its voice to those calling for an end to government influence in the country’s filmmaking industry. During the council’s executive committee meeting in the Croatian capital, Zagreb on 7 March, the Croatian Film Directors’ Guild (DHFR) participated in a round table discussion on the new government proposals to review all film funding initiatives prior to their approval. It outlined the issues that this political interference raises for authors and shared details of the Stand up for Croatian Cinema campaign that has been launched to oppose this move. Following further discussion, Writers and Directors Worldwide has given its unreserved support for the actions of Croatian filmmakers in this regard and has fully endorsed the Stand up for Croatian Cinema manifesto. On behalf of the international audiovisual community, the letter requests that the Croatian government take immediate action to:
  1. Restore and guarantee the independence of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, and
  2. Protect the freedom of cultural and artistic expression outlined in the Croatian constitution and the International Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions
Council president Yves Nilly has also made himself available should the Croatian government wish to learn more about the international context of this issue, particularly in relation to the ongoing global Audiovisual Campaign battle for creators’ rights currently being waged around the world.
